Which Andersen Models This Applies To
Andersen has built windows under a lot of names since the 1940s, and each line takes different hardware. The 400 Series (Andersen’s wood-clad workhorse since 1966) uses a specific sash balance system that newer 100 Series (Fibrex composite) windows do not. 200 Series windows sit between them, and older Narroline and Gliding windows from the 1970s and 1980s have parts that Andersen no longer catalogues. If your window has a rectangular etched logo on the glass corner, that’s your series marker. No logo? The serial number is stamped on a silver tag on the sash or frame edge, and that number tells us exactly what the factory built.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket question matters more with Andersen than with most brands. Andersen’s genuine hardware is built to their tolerances and carries their warranty. Quality aftermarket equivalents, like Truth Hardware operators and balancers, often match or exceed OEM spec for less money. We quote both, on paper, side by side, so you see exactly what you’re buying and what each layer of warranty covers. In Hollywood’s salt air, the cheapest aftermarket hardware corrodes in two seasons. We do not stock it.
Signs Your Andersen Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash drops when you unlock it. Andersen’s sash balances (the coiled or spiral springs inside the jamb) lose tension over time, especially in the humidity cycle Hollywood runs from May through October. The window still looks fine until gravity makes the decision for you.
- The crank spins or binds before the sash moves. Andersen casement operators have nylon gears that strip after years of salt-tinged air and sun. The handle turns, the gear teeth skip, the window stays put.
- Condensation you cannot wipe away. If moisture sits between the two panes of glass, the seal has failed and the insulating gas is gone. This is a glass unit replacement in the existing Andersen frame, not a full window replacement, and it is the most common job we do in Hollywood’s coastal humidity belt.
- A draft that was never there before. Andersen weatherstrip hardens over decades. The foam bulb seals on 400 Series sashes flatten out, and air finds the path of least resistance. This is often fixed with new OEM weatherstripping, not a new window.
- Water stains on the interior sill after a hard rain. That points to flashing, not the window itself. Hollywood’s afternoon downpours test every penetration in a house, and a window set out of square or flashed wrong leaks in the same spot every time.

You can safely check a few things yourself: read the serial tag, photograph the operator or balance, look for separated weatherstrip, and note whether the sash sits level in the frame. What you should not do is attempt Andersen sash balance replacement with a screwdriver and a YouTube video. Those balance springs are under enough tension to send a flathead through drywall, and a misjudged snap can take out a finger. Crank operators are simpler, but the mounting screws on a 30-year-old Andersen are often corroded into the jamb, and one stripped screw means a bigger repair than the original problem.
