Dale Kessler grew up around glass. His father was a glazier, and like a lot of tradesmen’s kids, Dale spent his summers holding the dumb end of the tape measure, fetching tools, and listening. He learned early what a level sounds like when it clicks true against a jamb, and what it feels like when it doesn’t. He learned that the smell of fresh glazing compound means somebody’s doing it right, and that the smell of silicone squeezed over a gap means somebody’s hiding something.
There’s a moment he remembers clearly from his twenties. He was on a job site, early morning, sun coming through a newly set picture window. The homeowner, an older woman, stood in front of it and just looked out at her yard for a long time.
